Consumer units

Also often called Fuse boards, these are an integral part of your home electrical installation, without one of these simply put you would have no electric in your house. It is also vital to have an up to date consumer unit with RCD'S : residual current device  & MCB'S: miniature circuit breaker, RCBO'S : Residual current operated Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection (a bit of a mouth full that one) and also Surge protection. Not only for ease of use if there is a fault on the circuit, but also to stay up to date with the latest electrical safety standards.

Old fuse boards often had a fuse wire or cartridge fuse fitted, every time there was a fault the wire would burn out and require the home owner to take out the fuse and rewire it or replace the cartridge. They were good back in the day, but are now well over due for improvement. Standards have changed since then and for much safer alternatives to keep you and your family or business safe.

A common accident that could occur with the old fuse wire/cartridge fuse type Fuse boards, which could cause injury or even worse death is when a lawn mower cuts though the cord. This may not 'pop' the fuse to cut power. Generally the lead would be wet from cutting the grass, the flex will have a bare live end and inevitably the user would pick this up. You can imagine what would happen next. This is why it is vital to have am RCD protected circuit for any electrical items that will be used outside.

The benefit of having a modern Consumer unit fitted to current electrical regulations is that all circuits will need to be protected by an RCD/RCBO, this drastically reduces the time for the circuit to trip, making the lawn mower situation safe.In fact they trip so quick you couldn't blink as fast! If a fault did occur on a circuit, these devices would detect this before any damage can be done. Before fitting a new consumer unit we would go though the existing installation to see if it would be suitable for an upgrade, and any remedial works would be noted and changed if necessary. Not only that, we would also make sure the mains incoming cut out is safe; if necessary where they are unsafe, we contact the relevant DNO (electricity board) who will ensure  the faults are rectified. This is normally done free of charge.

Re wires, Extensions and Loft conversions

We love a good Re-wire, Garage conversion, Extension and Loft conversion project.

We love ripping out old circuits and replacing with new to improve your property with safe and up-graded electrics. Always improving on the old and using modern materials to give you and your home what it deserves.

We know renovating a home can be one of the most stressful things you do in your adult life, (apart from having kids but thats a whole different story!) so using techniques learnt over the years of being in this trade we make sure that every job can run as smooth as possible, keeping to build schedules and lasing with you as the client or builders on site making sure all details are correct as the project goes ahead.

The great thing with a Re-wire is that you can choose the spec. As you know in a lot of older property's the electrical layout is awful with 1 socket per room in some places, light fittings in the wrong places etc.

So now If you want extra sockets in a room that is going to be an office you can have them. Want down lighters in your new kitchen, go for it. The world is your oyster when it comes to what you want in your property. We will happily go though any requirements you may require to get the specification you need.

Smart central heating and Homes

As i have found in the past peoples first step into getting there home smart and connected is via the Smart thermostat. For various reasons, but mainly the goal of saving money on energy consumption is Key. There are many different types of smart home systems out there 2 most popular ones we encounter are the Hive and Nest systems.

We like these two systems for there ease of use for you the consumer also they look stylish. Who would ave thought 15 years ago people would be talking about how good a thermostat looks!

Smart central heating systems from the likes of Hive and Nest are fantastic additions to your home. The benefits are fantastic with keeping track of your heating patterns online or via the APP. They are very clever in the way that they can track and learn your household patterns saving you energy and most importantly your bills.

As I wrote about above the thermostat is normally the first step. For example with hive you get a Hive hub which you can then connect various other devices to it ultimately making your house smart and all can be controlled seamlessly via our Phone, Tablet or PC  The various devices you can add on are great such as smart lamps where you can control when they turn on and off especially good if you are away, home security systems such burglar alarms, CCTV systems and video door bells you can monitor from your phone. Also of course you can add them to Alexa.

I'm sure as the range expands you will get even more features.

We don't just wire smart systems we also can work on normal conventional central heating wiring from a combi boilers, Y and S plan systems and underfloor heating.

Electric heating

With a vast array of different types of electric heating systems such as Storage heaters, Electric underfloor heating, Panel heaters, Electric radiators, Electric towel rails, Oil filled radiators, fan heaters, Infrared heating panels, and Ceramic Heaters. There are lots to choose from and getting the right one for your property is vital.

You will find after as the heaters get older they become more inefficient as elements and components start breaking down. Plus with the more modern heaters, they can come fitted with inbuilt thermostats and even WIFI technology to make them fit in with the smart home.

Storage heaters are still a very relevant item in properties with no Gas central heating often these properties using Economy 7-10 to make use of the cheaper nighttime tariffs to heat the bricks inside with the view of releasing the heat slowly the following day. It is important to make sure these are kept in good condition because if they are not maintained you will not be getting the best out of them and in the long run. Normally you will the life span is 10-15 years before elements start breaking down. What can normally write off an older model heater is the lack of availability of spares. Plus as with everything technology gets better so the newer heaters will have different features that may not be present on your current heaters.

Of course, there are pros and cons to storage heaters. Storage heating needs planning always thinking a day in advance, so if you are generally indoors during the day having a slow release of heat throughout the day is a good thing as you are generally using the heating system for whats it is intended for. But if you are generally out during the day at work and only home in the evenings the heat you have built up in the heaters would have been wasted and its full potential not released when you need it. Then it may be worth looking at other electric heating methods to warm your home. such as electric radiators.

If you have old panel heaters on your property why don't you upgrade them to newer stylish Infrared panel heaters? Not only are they a lot slimmer than a conventional panel heater so taking up less room. Unlike a panel heater that was designed to sit low level with the heat rising from the top and heating the air. Infrared panel heaters heat the room by bouncing inferred beams off objects around the room leaving them warm such as the wall etc. These are the same infrared beams that you would find in your TV remote control so they are perfectly safe to use around the home. Because of this technology they can be mounted anywhere, low level, high level, and even on the ceiling they are designed to be painted so you can make them blend into the room or even make a feature of them, with custom prints being put on them such as a family photo or even a famous painting being printed on it. Never before has an electric heater been so desirable.

Electric underfloor heating is a lovely way to heat a room where a wet system is not possible to install. It is cheaper to install than a wet system as it is just a mat to lay down rather than a complex system of pipes. The heat mats are normally installed under tiles. Once heated it feels so lovely under your feet when stepping into a cold conservatory or bathroom. Installed with a thermostat means you can control the temperature at your will.
